Sarri’s team must overturn the 2-1 of the first leg in the play-offs for the round of 16 of the Europa League: the biancocelesti have never lost at home against Portuguese teams
Overturn the 2-1 of the first leg. This is Lazio’s imperative before the match against Porto, valid for the Europa League play-offs: whoever passes the round will reach the round of 16. Maurizio Sarri’s team starts with the handicap of the result of the first leg, with the comeback of the Portuguese (double by Toni Martinez) after the advantage of Mattia Zaccagni. The subsequent draw at Udinese, with Felipe Anderson responding to Deulofeu, was not the best way to restart. But some data relating to the past suggest that Lazio can overturn the result and reach the second round.

First of all, Lazio’s performance in home games against Portuguese teams must be considered, obviously considering the official competitions. The record is five wins, one draw and zero losses. The only draw came against Porto, in the only match played between the two teams in Italy: 0-0 in the 2003 Uefa Cup semi-final, with José Mourinho’s men who had won the first leg 4-1 and who thus reached the final, then won against Celtic in extra time. And on the other hand, Porto have never won in their last nine away games in Italy, excluding qualifiers: three draws and six defeats in this period. The last away victory against a Serie A team dates back to September ’96, when the Portuguese won 3-2 at San Siro against Milan in the group stage of the Champions League.

There are therefore the elements to be able to think of a positive result for Lazio, even if Porto is a formidable team and launched at the top of the Portuguese championship, with a six-point advantage over Sporting. Two other aspects to consider: the defensive hold of the Biancocelesti in the home matches of this Europa League (no goals conceded in three matches) and the precedents for Lazio when it was necessary to overturn a goal behind after an away match. On three out of four occasions, the Capitoline club managed to overturn the situation: the last time in the round of 32 of the 2017/18 Europa League, with the 5-1 at Steaua Bucharest after the 1-0 for the opponents in the first leg.
