The continuous growth of merchandise traffic in the Port of Cartagena in recent months has slowed down in the first quarter of 2024, due to the arrival of fewer ships. The Port Authority attributes this slight decrease, amounting to 1.35% compared to the same period of the previous year, to the storms last March that prevented the entry and exit of ships for several days. Even so, exports and the movement of solid bulk continue to lead traffic, as well as the movement of live cattle, which increases considerably.
In terms of traffic, solid bulk cargoes maintain their growth by 7.55% more, with 2.77 million tons moved during the reference period. Thus, according to Port sources, this type of merchandise is led by those from the agri-food sector, with more than 1.6 million tons of cereal, soybeans and derivatives. Scrap metal has also experienced an increase, in this case of 133%. This has brought it to 31,826 tons, as well as chemical products, which have already reached 53,200 tons.
In liquid bulk, the figures show a movement of 6.81 million tons, which represents a percentage decrease of 3.48%, compared to the first quarter of 2023. The largest arrivals fall on crude oil with more than 3 .6 million tons unloaded. Petroleum byproducts already represent a quantity of 878,000 tons. 739,500 tons of diesel have already arrived and another 671,000 of natural gas.
General merchandise
In the rest of the categories, general merchandise accumulated 198,000 tons with a decrease of 17.3%, while container traffic increased by 3.52% with 140,634 tons moved, almost double that of the accumulated volume of the year. last month, whose increase in figures was 18.7%.
