The decision comes after days of negotiations, in which the Spanish minister and the Italian candidate have been the main obstacles
The leaders of the three main groups in the European Parliament, Manfred Weber (PPE), Iratxe García (S&D) and Valérie Hayer (RE) have closed this Wednesday an agreement to unblock the approval of the new Executive of Ursula von der Leyen with the Minister of Ecological Transition, Teresa Ribera, and the Italian candidate, the far-right Raffaele Fitto, as two of the vice presidents; which paves the way for the new European Commission to take office on December 1.
To do this, it is still necessary to complete several steps of the procedure, which involves reactivating this Wednesday afternoon the evaluations of the six vice presidents of the Executive and the commissioner of Hungarywhose decisions were put on hold last week due to the crossed vetoes of the EPP on Ribera and the Social Democrats on Fitto.
“It’s under control”said the president of the European Parliament, Roberta Metsola, to the press at the end of the meeting of group leaders (Conference of Presidents) in which the agenda for the next plenary session has been prepared and which includes voting on the approval of the Full commission.
Weber, García and Hayer have arrived at the meeting smiling, but without making statementsalthough parliamentary sources from the three parties have confirmed to Europa Press that there is a written agreement on a “pro-European agenda” for this legislature that also means unblocking the process.
