Pope Francis recognized, this Thursday (23), a new miracle attributed to the intercession of the London blessed Carlo Acutis, paving the way to make him the first saint of the new generation “millennial“.
The pontiff participated in an audience this morning with the prefect of the Dicastery for the Causes of Saints, Cardinal Marcello Semeraro, on which occasion Francis authorized the recognition of a new miracle linked to the intercession of the Londoner, who died in 2006, a victim of leukemia .
Francis also called a consistory, a meeting of cardinals, to set the start date for canonization, as two miracles are needed for such a process. The Vatican did not give details of when this would happen.
Marco was beatified in 2020, after the healing of a Brazilian boy was attributed to his intercession, in Mato Grosso do Sul.
The case happened during a mass for Our Lady of Aparecida, when a piece of clothing with her blood was exposed in the São Sebastião Parish in Campo Grande (MS). On that occasion, a grandfather, desperate because of his grandson’s illness, who suffered from an annular pancreas, made the child touch his clothes and he was cured.
The episode came to the attention of the Catholic Church and was considered a miracle, resulting in Marco’s beatification.
The pope recalled, in memory of the beatified, the intense work he did very early on the internet, expanding Catholicism in digital media. “He [Carlo] he did not settle for comfortable immobility, but met the needs of his time, because he saw the face of Christ in the most fragile”, said Francis, adding that “his testimony shows the young people of today that true happiness is found primarily in God and serving the brothers. An applause to the new young blessed of the current generation.”
Marco became known as “the patron saint of the internet” and “God’s influencer”, due to his early activity in computing and due to the use of the tool in the expansion of Catholicism.
He decided to use his knowledge to create a website, called Miracoli Eucaristici (Eucharistic miracles, translated into Portuguese), that compiled all the miracles that have happened around the world.
Born in London in 1991, the blessed died at the age of 15, in 2006, in the city of Monza, Italy, a victim of leukemia. His body is found in the Basilica of Saint Francis of Assisi, in Umbria, and is known for his youthful attire [veste com jeans e tênis].
