The Vatican announced this Thursday morning (9) that Pope Francis has allocated 100,000 euros (around R$550,000) to help victims of the catastrophic floods in Rio Grande do Sul last week.
In the statement, the headquarters of the Catholic Church said that the funds were taken from the Apostolic Alms, a department of the Holy See dedicated to charity, and will be allocated to “helping the homeless”.
“This amount was around 100 thousand euros and will be passed on to Regional South 3 of the National Conference of Bishops of Brazil, the regional that covers the entire Rio Grande do Sul, to help in whatever way possible”, stated the archbishop of Porto Alegre and president of the National Conference of Bishops of Brazil (CNBB), Jaime Spengler.
On Sunday (5), Pope Francis had already spoken out about the tragedy in southern Brazil by dedicating his prayer to the population affected by the serious floods. “May the Lord welcome the deceased and give comfort to their families and to all those who had to leave their homes,” said the pontiff.
The prayer was said from the window of the Apostolic Palace in the Vatican, where the pope expressed solidarity with the victims. “I assure you of my prayers for the population of the state of Rio Grande do Sul, in Brazil.”
