Europe is in a “pre-war era”, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk warns this weekend in an interview with several European newspapers. And Europe is not well prepared, says Tusk. According to Tusk, who was recently re-elected as prime minister, the current situation, referring to the Russian invasion of Ukraine, is comparable to the situation in 1939, just before the outbreak of the Second World War. “If Ukraine is defeated by Russia, no one in Europe will feel safe anymore,” Tusk said in the interview.
“I don't want to scare anyone, but war is no longer a concept from the past. It's real and it started a little over two years ago [sinds de grootschalige Russische invasie in Oekraïne]” , said Tusk. According to him, “the most worrying thing is that literally any scenario is possible at this point. And that's a situation we haven't seen since 1945.”
Tusk made his comments a few days after an unprecedented number of Russian attacks with drones and missiles on energy facilities throughout Ukraine, such as power stations. The attacks resulted in major power outages.
The Prime Minister and former President of the European Council, called on European leaders to do more to strengthen Europe's defenses. Europe must be “independent and self-sufficient” when it comes to its own defense given the looming danger from Russia and the uncertainty about American support.
European countries have been struggling for some time with the question of how far they want to go in supplying weapons to Ukraine in its fight against Russia. It is feared, by Germany and others, that if a more advanced weapon such as the Taurus missile is delivered, Ukraine will use it as an offensive weapon.
