The police see a sharp increase in the number of attacks with explosives. More than eighty attacks with explosives have been committed this year in Amsterdam alone, police spokesman Miriam Slot said in Opsporing Verzocht last night. An increase in such attacks has also been observed in the rest of the country. “The explosions are used in all kinds of conflicts. It could be about drugs, but we also have an example of someone who was refused entry to a catering business. Fireworks are then used as a threat.”
The broadcast included images of recent explosions at Amsterdam catering establishments. These are Café in the City on Kleine-Gartmanplantsoen, The Harbor Club on Cruquiusweg and El Punto Latino on Lange Leidsedwarsstraat. By sharing the images, the police hopes to track down the perpetrators.
The police believe that the attacks with heavy fireworks are committed to directly extort someone or indirectly harm an entrepreneur, by ensuring that a company is closed for a long or short period of time. “We have seen that at The Harbor Club and Café in the City in Amsterdam, for example.”
The police suspect that serious criminals are behind the explosions. “Intimidation with these types of explosives has become a business model for such serious criminals,” said Slot. However, the perpetrators arrested by the police are mostly young people. They set off heavy fireworks in exchange for money or drugs. “That is not only life-threatening for them, but it can also mean that the damage from the catering businesses is recovered from the young offender or his parents.”
