Dhe confrontation between the new center-left government and the voted-out right-wing forces in Poland reached a new height on Tuesday and led to the postponement of a parliamentary session. In the evening, the interior minister of the voted PiS government, Mariusz Kamiński, and his deputy Maciej Wąsik, who were convicted in December of usurpation of office and falsifying documents in a previous office, were arrested.
The President of the Sejm, Szymon Hołownia, said in a press conference on Tuesday: “The situation of a deep constitutional crisis does not guarantee that the deliberations of the Sejm this week will proceed calmly.” Concerned about the authority of the parliament and the “public Peace, because it is absolutely the most important value for us today,” he therefore ordered the meeting initially planned for Wednesday and Thursday to be postponed until next week. There should not be scenes “that we don’t want to see in parliament,” he said. He was apparently alluding to a possible scuffle. Hołownia reiterated that the MP mandates won by PiS politicians Kamiński and Wąsik in October had been “extinguished” due to a court order. Both politicians had announced that they would not resist arrest.
