With the new year upon us, Niantic announced it is going to update Pokémon GO inserting the mechanics of “power-up” ai PokéStop, which would reward players with additional tools.
The augmented reality title this year has recently kicked off the Season of Tradition, an event that began on Sunday 5 December with the Aroma Day. Characterized by numerous searches in order to open a huge door to discover great secrets from the past, we refer you to the link to our dedicated article to find out more.
Already a few months ago Niantic had talked about plans for Pokémon GO regarding the addition of upgrades to PokéStop, but today Niantic officially confirmed that the new mechanic will be coming to the game soon.
Players will be able to upgrade certain PokéStops and Gyms for a limited period of time by completing numerous objectives through the system AR Mapping, using the supplied device cams.
Upgraded PokéStops will look different on the map, and any trainer who flips one will receive an extra reward. The more trainers of level 20 and above will perform augmented reality scans of PokéStops, the higher the rewards will be and the stations will remain upgraded for a longer period of time.
With the new update of Pokémon GO, each PokéStop will be upgradeable by three levels, with five scans that will activate the first power-up, up to the maximum limit of 25 for the final stage. Note how this addition will benefit all coaches, not just those who will perform the AR mapping.
This new feature would appear to be a way to incentivize players to provide data to Niantic so that they can build an augmented reality database of territories and build one 3D map of the world… or at least of certain locations.
It would take a lot of data to reach this goal and it would just be natural that such a mechanic push players to use phone cams. We still don’t know when this update will be available, so we will be waiting for more news for a release date.
