This Monday, Podemos presented to the Minister of the Presidency, Félix Bolaños, a document of proposals to address the damage caused by DANA, which has already left more than 200 dead in several municipalities in the province of Valencia. He did so in the meeting that Bolaños held with the general secretary of the purple party, Ione Belarra, who after that meeting publicly asked to declare the state of alarm and launch a “social shield” for the affected people that, among other measures, includes total forgiveness of mortgages that weigh on homes that “have been left totally or partially uninhabitable” by the floods.
For rentals, on the other hand, it is proposed to be able to paralyze the payment of installments for a few months, so that people who cannot reside in their habitual residence due to DANA are not forced to pay for that apartment while They also face other temporary accommodation. In this case, the purple They propose making distinctions based on the landlord: “In the case of large holders or legal entities with several properties, the stoppage will be borne by the owners,” and “in other cases, the State will bear the cost of the same.” On the contrary, the bank would be responsible for the losses due to the forgiveness of mortgages.
The last of the housing measures is the only one that would require the implementation of the state of alarm and the assumption of all crisis management powers by the central government. Podemos proposes to intervene in the tourism sector of the Valencian Community “so that hotel rooms, empty homes in the hands of large owners and tourist homes are temporarily occupied by people who cannot return to their homes or who lack them.”
In relation to companies, the purple ones are betting on two very different measures. For small and medium businesses “that have been forced to suspend activity as a result of the catastrophe” it is also proposed the stoppage of mortgage and loan payments. On the contrary, for companies “that have made their workers attend work in times of alarm”, Podemos asks that there be “sanctions derived from non-compliance
of the obligations regarding Safety and Health at work” and that they be excluded “from opting for the aid previously provided”.
In addition, as was done during the Covid-19 pandemic with the price of masks, the training asks “intervene food prices in affected areas so that people can feed themselves adequately at affordable prices.” Along the same lines, Podemos proposes “establishing itinerant food banks to reach the areas with the greatest impact on commercial premises and infrastructure.”
To guarantee at least a certain level of income to citizens affected by DANA, Podemos also asked Bolaños to launch a basic income with the same amount of the minimum wage. “Given that the difficulty of obtaining paid employment will increase significantly after the catastrophe, and taking into account that the economic damage is very extensive and heterogeneous in the area, the implementation of a universal basic income […] for all the residents of the affected municipalities” would be “a quick and effective measure to prevent thousands of people from falling into poverty.”
