If you think about consoles PlayStation, what is the most iconic image that comes to mind? Many of you have probably responded mentally by indicating i four symbols drawn on all buttons official controllers, from that of the first PlayStation up to the DualSense of PS5. But do you know what they represent?
Whoever designed them took care of explaining it to us, that is Teiyu Gotowho had already talked about it years ago, more precisely in 1993, on the pages of Famitsu magazine, before the PS1 reached the shops.
According to Goto: “The triangle represents the point of view; I wanted it to symbolize the head or direction of the character, which is why I made it green. The square recalls a sheet of paper; I chose it to represent menus or documents and I colored it pink. Finally, the circle and the X symbolize ‘yes’ or ‘no’ decisions, and I wanted them red and blue respectively.”
Reversed use
This also explains why the Japanese used it, at least until PS5the circle button as confirmation and the X button to go back, complaining when Sony decided to reverse its use as per Western custom (in reality we were always wrong).
It is known that the PS1 controller underwent many changes during development, until the final version that we all know. Goto said at the time that Sony was proud to have created a controller that marked a clear departure from the model SNESconsidered the maximum on console, as well as almost a standard.
He also explained that the shape of the controller had not convinced many company executives. However, the final decision to adopt it was made by the then president of Sony Norio Ohgawho probably didn’t imagine he was about to make history.
