This year the Tekken series, which means “iron fist”, turns thirty. It is one of the most famous names in the fighting game genre, of which the eighth chapter was recently publisheddoubly tied to the PlayStation platform. It is on Sony’s consoles that Namco has built its success, and then spread it elsewhere, transforming it into a multiplatform and multimedia brand.
A dysfunctional family
It is therefore not surprising that PlayStation itself opened the celebrationsin the hope (ours) that Bandai Namco will do something more (a collection with the old chapters would not be bad). They did it by publishing a video dedicated to one of the recurring situations of the series, which has become a real meme, that is “the members of the Mishima family throwing each other from very high places.”
The Mishimas are the family that organizes the Tekken tournament, in which participants compete to obtain the title of “King of Iron Fist Tournament”. The meme remembered by PlayStation came to life in the very first chapter, in which Kazuya Mishima, having won the tournament, throws his father, Heihachi Mishima, off a cliff. Note that even the old Mishima had done the same with his son when he was little. In Tekken 2 it is repeated, but in reverse, with Heihachi throwing Kazuya into a volcano. In other chapters there are Mishima launches from helicopters, cliffs, other ravines and so on. They always come back, don’t worry. What a beautiful family, isn’t it?
