About two years after its debut, the hand-cranked portable console Playdate it can be purchased without having to queue for months and months. Panic managed to catch up with the reservations, satisfying all existing ones. According to data released by the company, more than 70,000 units have been shipped to date. Last April there were 50,000. That's another 20,000 units sold in less than a year, an excellent result, all things considered.
Currently there are some units available in the official store. So, if you are interested, hurry up and buy them.
Interviewed by The Verge, Greg Maletic, the head of special projects at Panic, stated that from now on waiting times for Playdate orders should be significantly shorter than what happened in the past. We are talking about a few days or, at most, a few weeks.
Furthermore, Panic announced the opening of the sale of the consoles in other territories, previously excluded:
- Bulgaria
- Croatia
- Cyprus
- Czech Republic
- Estonia
- Greece
- Hong Kong
- Hungary
- Latvia
- Lithuania
- Luxembourg
- Malaysia
- Malta
- New Zeland
- Norway
- Romania
- Singapore
- Slovakia
- Slovenia
- South Korea
- Sweden
- Swiss
Maletic said he was surprised at what a challenge it was to produce and sell Playdate, but he is satisfied with the current results, including more than 120 games present in the console's official catalogue, in addition to the 800 available on itch.io.
Naturally we are talking about small productions given that, as Maletic himself admitted, the Playdate market is limited and it is difficult to build a career around it. In short, many consider developing games for Playdate as a hobbymore than as a job.
