The episode in Q2 in Canada
At the start of Q2 the drivers were in a hurry to get on track because the rain – which never showed itself during Qualifying – seemed imminent. Max Verstappen he was outside the stand and was trying to ‘enter’ the fast lane. After letting a Racing Bulls pass by, the three-time world champion slipped in before a Williams passed.
On paper, the race director’s instructions underlined that the queue should be respected and this is why Verstappen finished under investigation as a result of this maneuver. The notification of the investigation arrived in Q2 and shortly afterwards, during that session, the Stewards announced that what happened would be analyzed at the end of Qualifying.
Max Verstappen and Red Bull they did not receive any sanctions for what happened. In the press release relating to this decision we read that Red Bull thought that Verstappen had crossed the white line that divides the fast lane from the stands and that therefore Verstappen had the right to insert himself between the cars.
This supposition was not supported by the facts, but in the position in which Verstappen found himself, the indication of the Race Direction is remove yourself from that equivocal position as soon as possible without causing obstacles to other cars if there is actually space between one car and another. Since these conditions were respected, there were no measures taken against Verstappen.
