In a first part of 2022 characterized by controversies of various kinds, one of the few realities that did not end up on the grill was the Pirelli. The sole supplier of tires in Formula 1 seems to have responded positively to the new technical directives introduced this year, however, with few tests available to evaluate the behavior of the different compounds.
A general response that has satisfied first and foremost Mario IsolaMotorsport Director of the Milanese company, who commented on the performance of the tires in a year aimed at creating more close battles on the track between the cars: “I’m happy – he explained to the FOM – the performance is good, but above all we have achieved most of the objectives that we had set for ourselves. The main aim was to create more action on the track, allowing the riders to be able to fight closely, and I must say that we have had races with a lot of action, even in the middle of the group. For us and for the teams it was also a great technical challenge, thanks to the total novelty of the tires from 18 pcs. However, our attention remains focused on the drivers, because they are the heroes of the show, and our job is to provide them with a tire that allows them to push, attack and fight. We don’t want to completely change the productbecause as I said, it works well ”.
However, despite all the strengths illustrated, Pirelli is facing some flaws that emerged this year. Above all, that of understeerwith the primary goal of reducing or eliminating it for next season: “We have a very good and solid rear tire that pushes the front and generates some understeer in low speed corners. – added Isola – is a general trend of all teams, because the new aerodynamic package is designed in such a way that the car is very well balanced at high speed, but at low speed generates this understeer. We are working to design a new structure, front and rear, with a higher level of integrity, so that the cars are faster and faster. We are studying one new front structure, more robust, to balance this and reduce understeer. It is not a revolution, nor a new product for next year. It is an improvement on the current one, which is positive ”.
