Piracy Shield, the anti-piracy system created by AGCOM, once again finds itself at the center of bitter controversy. Stolen and put online, its source code reveals a mechanism that goes far beyond the simple fight against piracy, raising heavy accusations of censorship and opaque and confusing management of IPs.
On the GitHub pages, where the code ended up, criticism of Piracy Shield's work emerges: Not only would it not be effective in its primary intent of blocking pirate sites, it would also represent a dangerous censorship tool, with the power to indiscriminately block legitimate websites and IP addresses. QThis management seems to constitute a real attack on freedom of expression and access to information, undermining fundamental democratic principles.
Piracy Shield: blocked IPs travel without borders
But the problems don't end there. In fact, it seems that the addresses IP blocked by the system continue to be sold abroadcreating an additional level of chaos: providers like OVH they find themselves selling IP inaccessible from Italy because they are included in the Piracy Shield blacklist, without their knowledge. This generates discontent and confusion among users who pay for a service they cannot use.
Adding further fuel to the fire is the intervention of the National Consumers Unionwhich loudly calls for greater transparency and clarity on the part of AGCOM regarding the functioning of Piracy Shield. Between blocks of legitimate sites and the theft of the source code, the platform seems to be shipwrecked in a sea of critical issues, so much so as to cast doubt on the actual willingness of the regulatory authority to resolve the problems that have emerged
The panorama that is painted around Piracy Shield is therefore complex and contradictory, and raises urgent questions about the management of the fight against piracy in Italy.
And what do you think? Can you see a way out of this labyrinth of censorship and technological disorganization?
