The development studio Phoenix Labsknown for the similar Monster Hunter Dauntless and Fae Farm, announced the deletion of all games in progress, with the dismissal of one hundred employees. This is a drastic reduction in the workforce, with the remaining staff focusing on support for the two games mentioned at the beginning.
The feral announcement was made via a post on LinkedInin which the studio says it will focus on supporting its two’s communities live service. Everything else has been blocked or deleted. In short, it’s not a complete closure, but it’s close, considering that a similar strategy leaves very little room for growth, unless Dauntless or Fae Farm suddenly start attracting millions of players.
An increasingly difficult market
According to what was reported by Nicole Carpenter of Polygon, who had the opportunity to speak with two sources within the studio, the ones who confirmed the hundred fired, among the canceled games there was one practically ready to be announced.
“This renovation This was not an easy choice and it is a last resort to ensure that Phoenix Labs survives and thrives in the long term.” wrote the firm, which then explained “it is impossible to put into words how grateful we are to all the individuals at talent who have contributed their hard work and great passion to each of the studio’s projects.” Of course, it is guaranteed that the studio will do everything possible to help the redundant people find new jobs.
That of Phoenix Labs is only the latest of many stories of layoffs in the two-year period 2023 / 2024. Just recently Microsoft announced the closure of four development studios, including Tango Gameworks and Arkane Austin, while a few days ago Square Enix announced announced layoffs in its western divisions. To put the situation in perspective, layoffs in the gaming market grew by 132% in April, with the studios affected now numbering innumerable, including Gearbox, Certain Affinity and Respawn Entertainment.
