The 16 young talents selected through the IAI (Inflammation and Auto Immune disease) Academy project of Incyte, a global biopharmaceutical company, are on average 26 years old. The task force of young talents – explains a note – will consolidate the new Business unit dedicated to inflammatory and autoimmune diseases, which has the aim of transforming the treatment paradigm in the field of dermatological diseases in which a high level of unsatisfied needs persists (unmet need), such as vitiligo, atopic dermatitis and hidradenitis suppurativa.
“The IAI Academy project was born from the awareness that today companies like Incyte have a broader and more structured role, which extends beyond the boundaries of the company – comments Onofrio Mastandrea, vice president and General Manager of Incyte Italia – The concept of social responsibility translates into the ability to generate shared value, which also impacts the community in which the company operates. The IAI Academy is a concrete example of how it is possible to bring together the business dimension with the social one: through the entry into the company. these young talents have increased our competitiveness and, at the same time, contributed to facilitating the meeting between the world of training and the world of work. Incyte is a future-oriented company – he continues – we strongly believe in the potential of the new generations and in the importance of investing in the development of young talents. This project reaffirms our commitment, which we wish to carry forward together with the institutions and the academy”.
With this talent acquisition model, Incyte also wants to contribute to bringing new generations closer to biotech, a rapidly growing sector full of professional opportunities of which, however, there does not always seem to be full awareness at the end of the training courses. A survey commissioned by Incyte and conducted by Emg Different, a market research company of the Adnkronos group, explored the perception of biotech companies in the life science field among approximately 300 young graduates and undergraduates in scientific faculties with an average of 23 years of age . Over half of those interviewed (55%) confirmed their interest in undertaking a professional path in the sector, motivated above all by the possibility of contributing to public health and improving people’s lives. Faced with this, 51% of the sample did not show familiarity with the professional figures operating within a biotech company and even 73% were unable to spontaneously cite any professional role in this sector.
Collaboration between companies and universities is essential to help young people acquire greater awareness and ensure growing integration between training and work, especially in highly specialized sectors such as biotechnology applied to health. On this topic, Andrea Rossi, CEO and general director of the Campus Bio-Medico University of Rome, one of the academic centers of excellence for the interdisciplinarity of science, which responded to the call to action launched by Incyte, observes: “The mission of the Campus Bio Medico University of Rome is strongly linked to the idea of an integral education. We aim to train not only generations of valid professionals in the fields of medicine, health and life sciences, but also to accompany our students. in their path of personal growth and approach to the world of work. The partnership with Incyte Italia fits precisely into this path, promoting the meeting between supply and demand of skills and allowing us to fully express the potential of our talents”.
To be won, this challenge cannot ignore the support of the institutions. As stated by the Honorable Marta Schifone, member of the XII Social Affairs Commission of the Chamber of Deputies and promoter of law 187/2023 on the establishment of STEM Week (Science, technology, engineering and mathematics), “a few months after the approval of the law , seeing the attention growing around university and professional courses in scientific and technological subjects fills me with pride. Schools, universities, institutions and businesses – he concludes – must intensify their collaboration to promote the acquisition and valorisation of these fundamental skills. to drive scientific progress and face the challenges of today and tomorrow”.
