The end of the year festivities inspired the team at Fazenda Abrigo de Fauna to photograph pets available for adoption with a Christmas theme. The animals such as the dogs Caramelo, Roliço and Berlin and the cat Beto, some of those impacted by the collapse of the B1 dam in Brumadinho, in the state of Minas Gerais, in 2019. They were rescued in construction areas or that were at risk in the communities and participated in a trial as a way to sensitize families interested in giving them a new chapter to their stories.
According to Vale, of the domestic animals rescued since 2019, 371 (244 dogs and 127 cats) have already been adopted. Another 270 (230 dogs and 40 cats) are still waiting for a new home. According to the supervisor at Fazenda Abrigo de Fauna, Magda Castro, there was a significant drop in the number of adoptions. Another 17 rescued animals were returned to their former owners.
“At the beginning of the pandemic, adoptions increased, but at the end of the year the numbers drop considerably and we find an even greater number of abandoned animals. The trauma of abandonment leaves several scars in a pet’s life, often the help of a veterinarian is needed to reverse this situation,” he explained.
According to Magda Castro, the shelter continues to receive animals, as long as they are related to the dam’s collapse or from areas at risk. On the other hand, the number of adoptions, the return of animals to the shelter has been small.
“The discards are very low, the ones that occurred were due to the animal’s lack of adaptation to the new home, or the family’s move to a place where it was not allowed to have animals”, said the supervisor of the shelter.
adoption process
Due to the covid-19 pandemic, in-person adoption events remain on hold. However, interested parties can learn about each animal on the “Take me home” page (www.vale.com/melevapracasa), which has already received around 20 thousand visits. In 2021, 95 animals were adopted. As it has the entire process online, it allows the adoption of pets by people from all over the country, as long as they can look for the pet at the Abrigo de Fauna Farm, in Brumadinho (MG).
“The monitoring has been done online, through photos, videos of the animal and interviews with the tutor, and when there are visits in person, all sanitary protocols recommended by the authorities and environmental agencies are followed,” said Magda Castro.
Veterinarians are trained to conduct remote interviews and the entire adoption process can be done remotely. Vale monitors the pet over the first six months. The action is part of the Fauna Protection Plan, presented by the company to public bodies.
