EDeselecting the mayor is not that easy, it is comparatively easy to withdraw patronage: the organizers of the species protection conference “Save the blue planet” do it with a simple email to Mayor Peter Feldmann (SPD). After a thorough discussion, those involved, including many “politically active people”, decided to “unilaterally cancel” the mayor’s sponsorship of the Goethe University project, according to the letter signed by co-organizer Subin Nijhawan. The e-mail was sent late Thursday evening last week, shortly after Feldmann had refused in the city council to comply with the resignation demand of the large parliamentary majority. At the interdisciplinary species protection conference, which is to take place on June 24th and is funded by the Federal Foundation for the Environment, school classes will discuss sustainable development in several languages.
Civil society actors used to like to adorn themselves with the name or the presence of the mayor. Anyone who persuaded Petra Roth or later Feldmann to give a speech on the club’s anniversary, to support a charitable project or to write a greeting for a club brochure was proud of it. That has changed. Since Feldmann has been accused of taking advantage in the AWO scandal, since he made himself impossible with an egocentric appearance at the Eintracht European Cup reception and with a sexist statement about flight attendants, many in the city society no longer attach importance to the 63-year-old politician in to be connected.
The shadow of the OB
Even before appointments at the Römer, it is openly or secretly hoped that Feldmann will not be there and thus not cast a shadow over the event. The Puhl Foundation, which intends to sign the Frankfurt Foundations’ Golden Book next week, specifically points out in its invitation that Elke Voitl (Die Grünen), head of the social affairs department, and Ina Hartwig (SPD), head of the cultural affairs department, will represent the city. According to the current planning, the mayor will not take part in the ceremony in the town hall. If anything changes, the official part will be canceled at short notice. “We assume that this would also be in your interest,” writes the foundation to the guests.
The local advisory board 3, responsible for the north end, apparently sees it similarly. It invites you to its summer reception on July 1st, where, among other things, a district prize is to be awarded to initiatives that bring nature into the city in the form of green backyards, facades and roofs retrieve. Actually, Lord Mayor Feldmann was also invited to the reception. But now, on the basis of a proposal by the FDP, the district committee spoke out in favor of uninviting the mayor again. Due to the current events, the local council considers Feldmann’s participation as “inappropriate”.
Eintracht board member Axel Hellmann had previously declared the mayor to be an undesirable person in the Waldstadion. Hellmann justified this with Feldmann’s behavior before and during the reception after Eintracht’s victory in the Europa League. Feldmann had taken the European Cup away from team captain Sebastian Rode and coach Oliver Glasner in order to present it himself.
In addition, he is said to have previously exerted pressure in vain to travel to the final as part of the Frankfurt delegation and to take part in the motorcade after returning. He forbade other politicians to go with the team on the Roman balcony because he was the only one who wanted to be celebrated there. Hellmann accused him of abusing his position as head of the house.
