In Argentina, a 24-hour general strike called by the General Confederation of Labor (CGT), linked to Peronism, has paralyzed some sectors of the country this Thursday (9).
According to local media information, the strike affects land, sea and air transport, as well as educational and financial institutions and companies.
The CGT says it called the strike in protest against the economic policies of Javier Milei’s government and accuses Casa Rosada of a “lack of social dialogue” and of imposing a “brutal adjustment” that affects low-income sectors.
In turn, the government, through spokesman Manuel Adorni, disqualified the general strike this Thursday, considering it a “purely political” act that “harms and complicates the lives of many people”
“It is a purely political act, which harms and complicates the lives of many people. It’s an incomprehensible strike,” said Adorni.
“They are betraying, as they have done almost without rest, the workers who will not be able to put food on the table, who live from day to day and who needed to go to work,” added the spokesperson.
The strike does not foresee mobilization on the streets, it only has the support of people who provide services in the areas of health, tourism and railway stations in Buenos Aires.
Adorni minimized the effects of the act and said that this “is a day when we see the consequences of an old union model. They play on the fear of people and businesspeople through violence.”
“This government has had more strikes than laws so far. Trade unionism, as we know it, doesn’t have much of a reason to exist, in terms of worker representation”, said the spokesperson.
Adorni also questioned the incidents reported by Argentine Security Minister Patricia Bullrich of attacks on vehicles that did not join the strike and pointed to union leaders: “They talk about compliance when they don’t let you move around, go to work, and they play with people’s fear through violence.”
