The illness of a child, especially if it requires long and demanding care, makes it possible to ask for a series of facilities to assist him. Forms of economic support and dedicated hospitality are also provided
A child’s illness affects the whole life family, starting with work activities. The absences necessary to assist a child are governed by the various employment contracts, generally with the resignation the parent asks the hospital for the hospitalization certificate for the purpose of self-certification. But possible to get permissions also to accompany the child who needs outpatient medical examinations. If the treatments are destined to last for a long time and frequently (the case of anticancer therapies, for example) and cause disabling effects in the child, the working parent has the right to special leave and leave. In these cases, however, it must have been ascertained by theInps the state of serious handicap (even for limited periods) which entitles the family caregiver to obtain a paid leave of absence up to a maximum of three days a month (law 104/1992) or an extraordinary two-year paid leave if an employee (in different ways depending on the use of the parent and the need for hospitalization or not of the child, and to be requested from INPS). There are other forms of abstention from work, unpaid or with a reduction in wages, linked to the need for assistance and the age of the child. In some cases, parents can ask the INPS for the indemnity accompaniment (regardless of income and whether the child is unable to perform the tasks of his age).
Transfers and holidays
Parents can ask their employer to be transferred to one site closer to home (and they can refuse distant transfers), to be exempt from night shifts or to obtain a part-time contract in the event of a child’s oncological pathology. The need to follow a sick child triggers solidarity between colleagues. Law 151 of 2015 recalls Elisabetta Iannelli, president of the Italian Association of Cancer Patients (Aimac), provides that workers can give free days of vacation or rest to the Colleagues who have run out of their own to assist minor children in need of care.
Home
If it is necessary to find accommodation in a different city for therapies, the third sector usually moves. In Lombardy, for example, the association A home away from home is active, which puts solidarity housing on the network and which in 2020 in Milan welcomed a thousand sick people, including a hundred children. As Laura Gangeri, vice president explains: We provide 73 shelters, belonging to non-profit organizations, who can contribute to the costs. The ranking considers distance, length of hospitalization and economic condition.
