Checo out in Q1
“You are 18th”. “It’s a joke”. This is the back-and-forth over the radio between the track engineer Sergio Perez and the Mexican driver, eliminated in Q1 in Qualifying for the Monaco GP. One year Checo made a mistake by going into the wall at Sainte-Devote, this time he stopped half a second from the best time in Q1, a sufficient delay to not go beyond the 18th timed performance.
A debacle for Perez who had already failed to get into Q3 at Imola. When the RB20 fails to adapt to the circuit, the Mexican driver, unlike Verstappen, is unable to go beyond the car’s limits, but there were several factors that complicated Perez’s lap. “I found traffic in Turn-5 and Turn-7, then in Turn-8 I had to dodge some banners that had detached and so I wasn’t able to get over the cut. A clean lap would have been enough. It was a disaster, a shame because in FP3 we had found solutions that had helped me and we had also made other changes”Perez said.
Perez has no illusions, he already experienced an ordeal in the race 12 months ago in an attempt to make up ground: “The weekend is over, there are no overtaking possibilities here”. Red Bull has 56 points ahead over Ferrari, an advantage that risks being practically halved in light of the starting positions in Monaco.
