Penske flawless
The seventh round of the season at Road America ended with a real triumph for the team Penske, with its three drivers celebrating together on the podium. A hat-trick led by Will Powerwhich returns to success for the first time in two years and which contributes, together with Josef Newgarden and Scott McLaughlinto achieve a 1-2-3 for the US team that had been missing since 2017. It was precisely in that year, in Sonoma, that the team obtained its last hat-trick, in that case again with Power and Newgarden, but with the victory by Simon Pagenaud.
Race report
A success which also allowed the Australian to move into the lead of the general classification, surpassing Alex Palou by five points, who finished in fourth place. A spectacular race that started immediately with a bang, literally. Already on the first lap Lundqvist’s dreams were shattered, as he scored his first pole position on Saturday but was rear-ended at the start by his teammate Marcus Armstrong, with the accident also partly involving Newgarden and Herta, with the latter finishing in a spin.
If we exclude this episode (to which was added the exit of Simon Kyffin, rear-ended by Christian Rasmussen for a real disaster for the Chip Ganassi team) the rest of the race continued effectively without caution, quite the opposite about what happened last week in Detroit. It was precisely in this context that, in addition to the performances of the individual drivers, the team outdid itself with strategies: between the 42nd and 44th laps, the Penske trio returned to the pits to replace the tyres, first with McLaughlin and Newgarden and subsequently with Power, who delayed the stop to return to the track in command until the checkered flag ahead of his teammates. 22ndIn the end, Luca Ghiotto, last of the classified to reach the finish line. This the complete order of arrival waiting for the next appointment, scheduled for June 21st to 23rd at Laguna Seca.
