‘The Substance’ was one of the films that caused the most talk at the 77th edition of the Cannes Film Festival. The feature film directed by the French filmmaker Coralie Fargeat generated mixed reactions, from applause to leaving the room by some spectators.
The plot follows Elisabeth Sparkle, played by Demi Moore, a once-famous actress who now works as a television show host. On her 60th birthday, she is fired from her job and, desperate to rejuvenate, turns to a mysterious black market product called ‘The Substance’. This treatment allows her to regain her youth, giving rise to Sue, her new twenty-something identity, played by Margaret Qualley.
Elisabeth’s transformation into Sue is not without complications. The process has a price: each must coexist only for seven daysa delicate balance that cannot be broken under any circumstances, and that allows the director to explore the control and fragility of the female body.
Pedro Ruiz goes to the cinema to see ‘The substance’ and gives his opinion openly
The result is a film that generates both laughter and discomfort, with moments that may be unpleasant for some viewers. So much so, that the distributor has issued warnings about the graphic content of the film, which has been causing talk on social networks since it was released.
One of the voices that has commented on the film is that of the Spanish comedian Pedro Ruiz, who through a message on the social network X (formerly Twitter) He has expressed his discontent with the ending of the film, which he described as “excessive.”
I saw THE SUBSTANCE. What he says is interesting. Fight vanity, ageism, the cult of image, machismo… Interest with good resources. The ending seemed excessive to me.
