The ‘CliniHome’ project of the Polyclinic Rodolico-San Marco of Catania, an App to facilitate communication between the parents of children with cancer and doctors, won the fourth edition of the Patients’ Digital Health Awards (Pdha), developed from the network of over 40 patient associations in collaboration with the Digital Health Academy and the unconditional support of the Msd Foundation. Among the finalists of Pdha22 there were also the CardioVest project by Comarch and myLab by Lightscience. The award ceremony, which was held online today, was attended by Francesco Gabbrielli, director of the National Center for Telemedicine and New Assistive Technologies of the Higher Institute of Health; Roberto Ascione, international expert in digital health and CEO of Healthware Group, and Goffredo Freddi, director of the Msd Foundation.
Innovation, inclusion, attention to young people, but above all listening to the local area and enhancing the home as a place of care, taking up the challenge of the objectives of the NRP, the National Recovery and Resilience Plan with digital technology, are the elements that patient associations have considered in the reward innovation at the service of people affected by a disease. A challenge accepted and won with enthusiasm, because also thanks to the Pdha Award in recent years the patients, who know the diseases, have acquired fundamental skills to be able to immediately grasp the value of those proposals that can represent a best practice.
The jury was made up of 44 patient associations transversal to all therapeutic areas, which this year made a ‘tour of Italy’ through the subdivision into commissions in the three territorial areas of the country (North, Center, South) to better grasp the voices from the field, listen closely to the territories. 42 projects were evaluated, mainly from companies and start-ups, but there was no lack of public realities such as universities, Irccs, hospitals, local authorities, etc. The winner will receive a cash grant worth 4,000 euros and a ticket for free access to the video on-demand of the Frontiers Health 2022 conference.
Accompanying the award on this journey was an exceptional ‘mascot’: the 3D sculpture DigitalMente, usable in augmented reality, created by the artist Francesca Fini precisely for the patient associations of Pdha22, in order to make more visible is the synthesis between the human and digital factors that the prize has always sought and valued.
“Also in 2022 the Award speaks of innovation and it does so starting from the PNRR – declares Freddi – With this edition of the Pdha award we wanted to look forward, to the future, without forgetting the important lesson that the pandemic left us: listening to the territory for better intercept the unresolved needs of those who face the obstacles of a disease every day. And this year too we are proud to support an initiative in which patient associations are co-protagonists – together with all other relevant actors – in the digital transformation process ; and they certainly are with great competence and with an enlightened vision, capable of fully appreciating the value of a technology, also grasping its human aspect, its value as an appropriate response to people’s real needs “.
The jury, chaired by Antonietta Pannella (president) and Cristina Cenci (vice president) of the Digital Health Academy, made use of patient engagement and healthcare policy experts: Domenica Taruscio, director of the National Center for Rare Diseases, Higher Institute of Health; Teresa Petrangolini, director of the Patient Advocacy Lab, and Guendalina Graffigna, director of EngageMinds Hub.
