Patrick Zaki is free. The activist student was released from a police station in Mansura and immediately embraced his mother and sister in a narrow street overlooked by the police station, between police barriers and traffic. Yesterday the court decision to release him pending the next hearing in the trial, scheduled for 1 February next because Zaki has not yet been acquitted of the charges for which he has been held prisoner so far.

“We’ve been waiting to see that embrace for 22 months and that embrace comes from Italy, from all the people, all the groups and local authorities, the university, the parliamentarians who made sure that that embrace came”, he says Riccardo Noury, spokesperson for Amnesty International Italia. «A hug – says Noury ​​- especially to the media that have kept the attention high for these 22 months. Now that we have seen that embrace, we are waiting for this freedom to be not temporary but permanent. And with this hope we will arrive at February 1st, next hearing ».
