Today you can follow a particularly celestial spectacle in the sky: a partial solar eclipse. The ticker guides you through the event.
- Today around noon (about 11-13 clock) takes place a partial solar eclipse instead of.
- The solar eclipse can be seen throughout Germany and large parts of Europe.
- The ticker guides you through the event – when the clouds clear, there are also very current pictures to see.
+++ update ticker +++
+++ 12.18 p.m.: Here in the Rhein-Main area, the partial solar eclipse has reached its maximum or has already exceeded it again. This view through the telescope shows the sun just a few minutes before the maximum:
+++ 11.54 a.m.: The solar eclipse is approaching its maximum in the Frankfurt region. In Frankfurt, the sun is 22.9 percent obscured by the moon at 12:10 p.m.
Partial eclipse is nearing maximum
+++ 11.38 a.m.: Unfortunately, at the observation site here near Hanau, hardly any of the solar eclipse can be seen, it is mostly hidden behind thick clouds. But a few pictures through the telescope were successful. You can see that the moon has already “bitten” a bit out of the sun. Because the sight was photographed through a reflecting telescope, it is mirror-inverted – if you look at the sky with solar eclipse glasses, you can see that the piece of sun is actually “missing” at the top left.
Solar eclipse today: time of maximum
+++ 11.15 a.m.: In the meantime, the solar eclipse has begun in the Rhein-Main area. From the upper left, the moon’s shadow should slide black across the bright sun.
+++ 11.05 a.m.: If you can actually see the sun, there is one very important thing to remember: never look at the sun without proper eye protection. A pair of sunglasses is not considered “sufficient” – what is meant is, for example, solar eclipse glasses or a special filter film. You can read more about this in the article “Protect your eyes: How to watch the solar eclipse safely“.
+++ 10.57 a.m.: It starts in a few minutes, the new moon is slowly moving in front of the sun. At what time maximum coverage is expected in your area, you can look in the table.
Partial solar eclipse today: See event despite clouds
+++ 10.26 a.m.: If the cloud layer is too thick for you to catch a glimpse of the sun, there is a remedy: Several live streams show the eclipse today from different parts of the world – and somewhere the sun will definitely be visible.
Update from 10.15 a.m.: Welcome to the ticker about the partial solar eclipse on October 25th. Here you can find out everything you need to know about the “SoFi” – if the clouds clear up in time, there will also be telescopic views of the partially eclipsed sun afterwards. Shortly after 11 a.m. the moon will begin to move in front of the sun, the maximum is expected shortly after 12 p.m. – just in time for the lunch break.

Partial solar eclipse in the ticker: This is happening in the sky above our heads
First report from October 25, 09:00 a.m.: Frankfurt – If you look up at the sky around noon today, you can marvel at a very special celestial event: a partial solar eclipse is on October 25, 2022 seen in large parts of Europe. The new moon, which is actually not visible in the sky, partially moves in front of the sun and thus covers part of the celestial body. However, the coverage in the German-speaking area will be limited – a maximum of 35 percent is possible on Rügen. the solar eclipse one should therefore only perceive them if one observes them directly with special protection.
Depending on the observation location, the start time, the moment of maximum coverage and the end of the eclipse shift somewhat – details can be found in the table in this article. It can be easily said that the eclipse will last from about 11 a.m. to about 1 p.m., with the maximum occultation of the sun taking place around 12 p.m. The begins in Frankfurt am Main moon at 11:11 a.m. and leaves the solar disc again at 1:10 p.m.; the maximum coverage of 22.9 percent is reached at 12:10 p.m.
Partial solar eclipse today: Do not look at the sun without protection
When observing the sun – whether with or without aids – the following always applies: without eye protection, you should not risk looking directly into the sun – there is a risk of eye damage or even blindness. It is particularly fatal that damage to the retina is not immediately noticeable because it does not cause pain. There is no warning signal from the body – if the eye is damaged, it is too late. To the Safe to watch solar eclipseyou should use solar eclipse glasses when observing with the naked eye or, for example, make a pinhole camera out of everyday objects.
Even Sofi glasses from the past few years can still be used – things like sunglasses, blackened glass or a CD, on the other hand, do not provide sufficient protection for the eyes, experts emphasize again and again.
What can you see during a partial solar eclipse?
But what can you actually expect when observing a solar eclipse? In the case of the partial solar eclipse on October 25, 2022, the new moon moves in front of the sun around noon. A part of the earth is touched by the penumbra of the moon – this is where the solar eclipse can be seen. Anyone who observes the sun through a solar eclipse film will be able to see how the new moon slowly moves in front of the sun and “nibbles” the solar disk from one side. The black shadow will be clearly visible.
This phenomenon is particularly fascinating when you consider what is happening in front of your own eyes: one celestial body moves in front of another on its orbit and blocks its light for a short time.

Solar eclipse in the live stream: How to see the event despite the clouds
If the weather is too bad and clouds are in the way of the partial solar eclipse, there are still ways to observe the solar eclipse: There were several Solar Eclipse Live Streams announced who want to broadcast the event on the Internet – and hopefully somewhere the sky will be clear, because until the next solar eclipse in Germany It will still take a while until October 29, 2025, when there will be another partial solar eclipse. You have to be even more patient until the next total solar eclipse: The sky spectacle can only be seen again over Germany on September 3, 2081. (tab)
