The partial results of local elections in the United Kingdom, held on Thursday (5), indicate that the Conservative Party, under Prime Minister Boris Johnson, is expected to lose a large number of seats. Before the election, the prime minister was cornered by the Partygate scandal and by the population’s dissatisfaction with rising prices and the cost of living.
The British chose members from 146 unit, metropolitan and district councils in England, 32 councils in Scotland and 22 in Wales.
According to information from the BBC, the partial count indicates that the Conservatives have already lost more than 330 seats on local councils in England. In Scotland, the Scottish National Party (SNP) was the most voted, with the Labor Party replacing the Conservatives as the second largest party. The SNP added 23 more councillors, while Labor gained 19. The Conservatives lost 62.
In Wales, the Conservatives lost to Labor the only council they held, Monmouthshire. The final results of the British local elections should be known this Saturday (7).
The regional elections coincided with the election of the Northern Ireland Assembly, where Sinn Fein, a former political wing of the IRA, appears in the partial count as the most voted first option. If confirmed, it would be the first victory for an Irish nationalist party in the House since the creation of Northern Ireland in 1921.
