Helsinki Töölönlahti the park’s summer flowers are planned to be displayed as far as possible until autumn.
The one-year summer flowers from the planters are harvested for compost when they no longer look good because of the weather, says the project manager of the park renovation, landscape architect Jere Saarikko.
In principle, the flowers on the ground are allowed to stay.
“The idea is that they are allowed to stay as winter starters, food for birds and wintering places for insects,” says Saarikko.
Perennial meadows will be established in some of the park’s areas, where onion plants will be planted. According to Saariko, the summer flowers will be removed from these areas during the fall.
According to Saariko, the date of removal of the annual summer flowers is not announced in advance, and they are not offered to the townspeople to pick.
“The flowers are then already dead or dying,” he says.
Establishment Stara’s responsible district gardener Mari Kaunismaa does not want to comment to HS in more detail about the timing of the removal of summer flowers.
“Otherwise, they will leave there in advance”, he guesses.
In the removal phase, the blooming period is over, so flowers are not offered to city dwellers.
“There is no way there will be a bouquet then,” says Kaunismaa.
When the flowers start to be in bad shape, they are taken to the compost and recycled growing medium is made from them, says Kaunismaa.
Perennials remain in the park for the winter. According to Kaunisma, the hope is that people would not take them at the point when the summer flowers leave.
How about if you happen to be on the spot just as the flowers are being removed and you see flowers in good condition being removed? Can I then ask the employees about taking the flowers?
“You can always ask,” Kaunismaa says.
However, he does not encourage harassing employees. The aim is to remove the flowers only after they have bloomed.
“I understand that it’s nice to have flowers in a vase. But people get even more joy from letting the flowers last as long as possible into autumn.”
Anyone can pick small amounts of flowers from the flower meadows of Haltiala for their own use, Kaunismaa reminds.
In planters in addition to the existing summer flowers, loose chairs will be removed from Töölönlahti park before winter, says Jere Saarikko.
“They are not needed as much in the winter, and they keep better inside.”
Otherwise, according to Saariko, nothing will be removed from the park in the fall. The park’s new permanent plantings are currently being prepared.
“There will be trees, perennials and bushes. Really versatile and plenty of plantings,” says Saarikko.
