The South also invests in cycle tourism: here are some destinations not to be missed for those traveling by bicycle
Last week in Bologna the Cycle tourism fair, an unmissable event for two-wheel lovers. L'Emilia Romagnaa is known for its special routes for bicycles but as wisesociety.it reports, perhaps few people know that even at the South you can find just as many cycle routes not to be missed. In fact, it is no coincidence that according to the Isnart 2023 report, tourists on two wheels in the Southern Regions, with Puglia and Basilicata in first places, grew from 7% in 2019 to 17.4% in 2022.
One of the most beautiful cycle routes is that of Parks of Sicilywhich with its slopes allows you to immerse yourself in nature starting from the Ionian and Tyrrhenian coasts up to the slopes of Etna:
- the Alcantara River Park
- the Etnna Park
- the Madonie Park
- the Nebrodi Natural Park
We then have i natural parks of Calabria, with four protected areas covering an area of over 300 thousand hectares. In 2021 the Calabrian Parks Cycle Route was awarded the “Italian Green Road Award” Cycle Tourism Oscar:
- Pollino National Park
- Gambarie in Aspromonte
- Sila Park
- Calabrian Serre Park
In Basilicata there are 21 itineraries that touch 81 villages and 124 points of interest such as:
- Aglianico DOC cellars
- route from Venosa to Oppio Lucano
- Via Verde from Matera to the Lucan Dolomites
In Puglia you can pedal on “aquatic” route along the Puglia tables. The cycle route starts from Cisternino to Ceglie Messapica for a total of 16 kilometers. Soon another 8 km will be added up to Mount Fellone in the countryside of Martina Franca. Furthermore, in 2026 the cycle route will extend up to 192 km and will be connected with the most important European routes.
