Paris 2024: Track Cycling, Viviani and Consonni Silver in Madison
On the penultimate day of racing at the velodrome in Saint-Quentin-en-Yvelines, Italy won silver in the men’s Madison with Elia Viviani and Simone Consonni. After the splendid gold medal won by her teammates in the women’s race, a beautiful silver medal was won behind Portugal and ahead of Denmark.
The Italian duo remained in the lead until 10 laps (of the 200 planned) from the end and paid for Consonni’s fall in the final stages which did not allow the Italians to play their cards at their best in the two final sprints in which they were overtaken by Portugal. Viviani, at the last Olympics, wins his third medal after the gold in Rio and the bronze in Tokyo in the Omnium and ends in tears.
For Italian cycling it is the fourth medal in Paris, after Filippo Ganna’s silver in the road time trial, the bronze in the pursuit quartet and the gold in the women’s Madison by Vittoria Guazzini and Chiara Consonni.
