Paris 2024, “Italy-Hungary was rigged”. But the water polo match will not be repeated
Italy-Hungary, the water polo match that cost the Azzurri elimination in the quarterfinals of the Olympics against Hungary, will not be remade. The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) rejected the appeal of the Italian Swimming Federation, although the Management Committee of World Aquatic (world federation) in its report spoke of a “match distorted” by the referee’s decisions. So, the controversy continues not to subside regarding the match which was heavily influenced by refereeing decisions which then led to the elimination of the Settebello from the main draw.
The Management Committee contradicted the referees, delegates and VAR and definitively admitted that Condemi did not commit violence (“brutality”). Therefore the 3-3 scored by the Italian striker against Hungary was valid. According to the World Aquatic committee, “the striker should not have been sent off, Italy should not have played 4 minutes less, the Magyars should not have benefited from the penalty for 4-2. In short, the match was completely distorted by the referee’s decision”. The document drafted by the committee composed of Antonio Silva (Portugal; President of European Aquatics), Joo Hee Park (South Korea), Erik Van Heijningen (Netherlands and coordinator of the appeal panel), refers to the measures to be taken in relation to the expulsion of Condemi for rough play. The report states that “after considering the circumstances of the case and having examined the available video of the action, the Management Committee cannot conclude that there was malicious intent in the act of throwing the ball by Condemi, whose hand struck the opponent’s face. Therefore Condemi will not be excluded from further matches of the tournament for this action”.
