Papu Gomez He is exercising these days with the CD Manchegofrom the Second RFEF waiting for the punishment imposed on him by the UEFA for consumption of substances prohibited by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA). The Argentine ended his contract last season with Italian club Monza, with whom he was only able to play two games in October 2023 before his sanction for positive doping was known. The playmaker’s appeal was rejected by UEFA, which upheld his punishment for two years.
Papu Gómez, 36, terminated his contract with the Sevilla FC on September 1, 2023 but had been detected positive in a control in November 2022, being a footballer for the Nervión club and days before the start of the Qatar World Cup with the Argentine team. The UEFA doctors showed up unexpectedly at Sevilla’s training session to carry out the check and Papu recorded the incident that led to this sanction.
According to the footballer himself, the positive test had to do with the ingestion of a cough syrup that he took without first consulting the club’s doctors. “I mistakenly and accidentally, involuntarily and unintentionally took a spoonful of my little son’s syrup to relieve his cough,” Papu revealed at the time. This syrup contained Terbutaline, a substance that is prohibited and is on the WADA list. The organization specifies that the consumption of a minimum dose of this medication is already considered positive doping.
«The sanction was two years and we are seeing if something can be done to reduce it. I live it patiently, waiting for positive news. Let’s see if they reduce my penalty and I can play again. Meanwhile, I’m playing paddle tennis a lot. There is a group of Argentinians and I play tournaments with them: Denis, Cambiasso…”, pointed out the Argentine in a recent interview.
