I.In several federal states, stricter corona regulations will take effect this Monday. Contacts in private and public life are being further restricted, especially in order to prepare against the highly contagious Omikron variant. Some federal states had already started this at Christmas, others are now following suit. From Monday, stricter rules will apply in Baden-Württemberg, Lower Saxony, Brandenburg and Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. Other countries will follow on Tuesday. The federal and state governments had agreed on these measures.
Despite the recent drop in the number of cases, stricter protective precautions will apply throughout Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania from Monday. Cinemas, theaters, museums, the interior areas of zoos, swimming pools and other leisure facilities must remain closed across the board. In Brandenburg, from Monday, there is an upper limit of ten people for people who have been vaccinated and recovered at least until January 11 for private indoor or outdoor meetings. In Lower Saxony, too, only groups of up to ten vaccinated and convalescents are allowed to meet – not including children. In Baden-Württemberg there will also be a curfew in restaurants from 10.30 p.m. to 5 a.m. from this Monday.
Case numbers still not reliable
The seven-day incidence increases slightly after a long decrease compared to the previous day. The Robert Koch Institute (RKI) points out that less test and reporting activity can be expected during the holidays and at the turn of the year. Therefore, the officially reported number of cases could only show an incomplete picture of the situation.
The RKI stated the number of new infections per 100,000 inhabitants and week on this Monday morning as 222.7. For comparison: the previous day the value was 220.7, a week ago 315.4, a month ago 340.7. The health authorities in Germany reported 13,908 new corona infections to the RKI within one day.
According to the new information, 69 deaths were recorded across Germany within 24 hours. The number of people who died with or with a proven infection with the Sars-CoV-2 virus rose to 110,433. A week ago there were 180 deaths.
In Germany, more than seven million corona infections have been reported since the beginning of the pandemic. The RKI put the total number on Monday morning at 7,005,289. The actual number is likely to be significantly higher, as many infections are not recognized and therefore not recorded.
The number of corona patients admitted to clinics per 100,000 inhabitants within seven days was stated by the RKI on Friday as 4.55 (Thursday 4.55). The RKI stated the number of people recovered on Monday at 6,156,500.
Vaccination campaign started exactly a year ago
Vaccinations against the corona virus continued over the holidays in Germany. The federal government has now achieved its target of 30 million vaccinations set in mid-November by the end of the year, as Health Minister Karl Lauterbach (SPD) announced on Sunday. Around 147 million vaccine doses have been administered so far. The vaccination campaign officially started on December 27, 2020, and in isolated cases the vaccinations had started a day earlier.
According to the vaccination dashboard, 21.7 million people in Germany are currently still unvaccinated (26.2 percent of the population). Of these, 4 million are aged 0 to 4 years (4.8 percent of the population), for whom vaccines are not yet available.
In numerous German cities, opponents of Corona measures want to mobilize this Monday. Demonstrations have been registered in several cities in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, Hesse, Rhineland-Palatinate and Brandenburg as well as in Mannheim in Baden-Württemberg. On Boxing Day, several hundred people protested against Corona regulations in Berlin and Schweinfurt.
