This year, Pakistan witnessed the largest amount of rainfall during April since 1961, reaching more than double its usual levels during this period, according to the Meteorological Department.
It explained in a report issued on Friday night that precipitation “reached 59.3 mm,” a marked difference from the average for this month of the year, which was 22.5 mm.
The authorities counted the deaths of at least 144 people as a result of storms and slides due to heavy rains during April.
While many parts of Asia are witnessing an unprecedented heat wave, Pakistan recorded a decline in the average monthly temperature, reaching 23.67 Celsius compared to 24.54 Celsius normally.
Meteorological Authority spokesman Zuhair Ahmed Babar said that climate change is the reason for these changes.
He explained to Agence France-Presse, “Climate change is an important factor that affects all unexpected climate phenomena in our region.”
In 2022, Pakistan suffered devastating floods that affected about a third of the country’s area, killing 1,700 people, and affecting approximately 33 million people.
