One of Girona’s great challenges before starting this season, historic and perhaps unique, was to create a long and competitive squad to perform in all three competitions. Fate, and also misfortune in the form of injuries, has been putting the Girona players’ wardrobe to the test until reaching an emergency situation against Real Sociedad.
Up to eight casualties, most of them starters, had the red and whites in Montilivi. A situation sustained with wires, plagued by the bench of homegrown players, which led to a predictable defeat against the San Sebastián team, one of the cocks of the League, because of a goal from Oyarzabal, the first of the course.
Danjuma, the most inspired of Girona, had the tie with a cross shot in the final stretch
Míchel wanted to value the idea above the names, despite being forced to change the drawing, with three starting centre-backs, but the red and white team missed the overflow of Bryan Gil, Asprilla and Tsygankov or the hierarchy and clarity of Blind and Romeu. Two teams that live off pressure and weave the game together with silk thread faced each other. On the other hand, they lack a goal and it was first noticed in a failed shot by Óskarsson or in a cross that sailed through the small area unrealistically without a finisher.
Both the Basques and the Catalans dominated in stretches, with Girona taking center stage at the start and then Real, who almost scored with a header from Oyazarbal and a missed one-on-one by Óskarsson. Danjuma, the only winger, also the most inspired, was insufficient to counter Alguacil’s team. Míchel exploded with a reprimand to his team that was heard by part of the stadium. And the visitor’s goal came, on the stroke of half-time, in another high shot by Oyarzabal, unmarked with Herrera as a spectator.
Girona did not get up from the canvas until game time, more apathetic and lacking faith. Coinciding with the entry of Stuani and Misehouy, the red and white team regained their sensations, once again in the rival field. The young Dutchman provided electricity with his driving and teamed up with his compatriot Danjuma, who had the tie in a cross shot repelled by Remiro.

The fans were vociferous, and they responded to Míchel’s affront with a great entrance. But it was of no use. With more heart than head, Girona tired of centering the area without luck until the final whistle confirmed the victory of a Real team that has never lost in the First Division against the people of Girona. Fortunately, or perhaps not, Míchel’s men this season only need to wait three days to make up for it, on Tuesday against Slovan Bratislava in the Champions League.
