Hundreds of people marched in silence this Wednesday through the streets of Xixon at the demonstration called by the unions UGT and CCOO to demand measures against work accidents that caused thirteen deaths in Asturies so far this year.
Under the motto ‘Not one more death at work, prevention, safety, corporate responsibility’, the protesters have walked the streets of the city center, between the Plaza del Humedal and the City Hall.
The general secretaries of UGT and CCOO of Asturias, Javier Fernández Lanero and José Manuel Zapico, respectively, have held companies responsible for the high number of accidents at work, which from January to October were 23 percent more than in the same period 2023, and have asked for a shock plan to stop the escalation.
Fernández Lanero has regretted that issues such as workplace accidents and gender violence are not part of the agenda of the next Conference of Presidents and has announced that the unions will continue with the demonstrations to demand that the administrations reinforce preventive control measures now. companies that comply with the law.
The leader of the UGT has highlighted that there is unfair competition between companies that break the laws and those that comply with them and has accused businessmen of making them competitive as in the last century.
The work accidents that were recorded this year “are from the last century” and the employers “are repeating speeches from the last century” and do not want to “talk about prevention and safety” at the social consultation tables, “they only talk about absenteeism and that “The workers don’t want to work,” he expressed.
Zapico, for his part, has stated that the high number of accidents is not due to “coincidences” or “a bad streak”, but to non-compliance with laws and the scarcity of control mechanisms.
“A death at work that can be avoided is not an accident, it is a homicide,” he pointed out.
At the same time, he has considered it necessary and urgent to reinforce prevention control by administrations, because currently there is only one inspector for every 10,000 workers and 1,500 companies, he has pointed out.
