Returning to any game is always a double-edged sword thanks to how deceptive nostalgia is. On the one hand, you may reaffirm the enormous affection you had for that title and of course, confirm that in fact what you played at the time was full of quality, but on the other, it is possible that you realize that in reality, the thing is not It was as good as you remembered. Nintendo has been very selective in which games to bring back and which not to bring back, concentrating its efforts mainly on things like the Gamecube and the Wii, but also finally turning to look at the 3DS, a console that we might think happened yesterday, but in fact, already It is more than 10 years since it was launched.
A couple of days ago we began our adventure through Luigi’s Mansion 2 HDremastering that brings back Luigi’s Mansion: Dark Moon, which was launched in 2013 as an exclusive for the 3DS in the middle of the so-called year of Luigi. This time is remembered for Nintendo as a rather complicated time, since the Wii U simply did not increase in sales and its laptop also continued to struggle after the slow debut it had in 2011; However, it was beginning to show its true potential with games that took great advantage of its particular hardware.
Undoubtedly, the idea of bringing back Dark Moon in the middle of 2024 is interesting, because let’s remember that it is a game that caused some controversy and even division among fans, this mainly due to its structure that many claim, “limits the exploration that we did see in the first Gamecube installment”, in addition, It had not been relaunched until now. Personally, I don’t agree. At the time I greatly enjoyed Luigi’s second solo adventure. It seems to me that Next Level Games demonstrated a strong understanding of the concept, showing off impressive level design, puzzle creation and refinement of the combat itself, all with truly impressive graphics supported by the stereoscopic 3D of the console.
Returning to the topic of Luigi’s Mansion 2 HD, I tell you that after these first hours, it is clear to me that it is a product that is quite to the point and that does not beat around the bush; That is to say, you can expect exactly the same game that we enjoyed 11 years ago on the 3DS, this of course, with the significant improvement in image quality and performance. I would have loved to have had meaty extras, but at least in this first encounter I didn’t see any. Likewise, I would tell you that there are no big changes in terms of quality of life, since the reality is that the original does not seem to need them.
What will obviously jump out at you is the increase in resolution. Connected to TV, Luigi’s Mansion 2 HD It displays beautifully at a resolution that I’m sure is 1080p or at least very close to it, while on a laptop it looks incredible at 720p. One of the main complaints of Dark Moon was that its performance was not always the best, constantly falling below 30 frames. At least from what I have with this new version, the framerate has remained completely solid in a great way at those 30 frames per second.
Something we would obviously lose from the original version of the game was the stereoscopic 3D effect that the 3DS was capable of. Does this affect Luigi’s Mansion 2 HD? In general I would say no, but there have been a couple of moments in which, precisely because I did not have this clear depth, I could not find where to walk or where to direct Luigi to attack an enemy, for example. Also, well, we are left without that particular look of Dark Moon that made you feel like you were watching little dollhouses inside your console.
From the first moment I loved what was done with Luigi’s Mansion: Dark Moon on the 3DS and the way in which it served as a sequel to the Gamecube classic, so since Luigi’s Mansion 2 HD was announced, I felt great emotion. This first couple of hours with this new version of Switch reminds me how special Next Level Games is to work with, although I would undoubtedly have loved to have had some important extra like a new mansion or at least some concept art or music.
Luigi’s Mansion 2 HD is scheduled to release next June 27 exclusively for the Nintendo Switch. Very soon you will be able to see our complete coverage with the final impressions of said title.
