The European economy is gradually suffocating because of the “shot in the lungs”. This is how Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban commented on July 15 on the EU sanctions policy against Russia, the consequences of which were so keenly felt by the countries authoring the restrictions against the Russian Federation.
“I must say, at first I thought that we just shot ourselves in the foot, but now it seems that the European economy has shot itself in the lungs and therefore it is now suffocating everywhere,” declared he is on the radio Kossuth.
According to Orban, an economic downturn awaits Europe in the coming months. He noted that various studies, analyzes and forecasts point to such a scenario. Due to the reverse effect of sanctions against Russia and the situation in Ukraine, the European economy is gradually beginning to shrink, the Hungarian prime minister added.
Earlier on Friday, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Andrey Rudenko pointed to the confrontational line of the European Union and its sanctions policy leading to a split in Europe.
On July 14, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Vershinin said that attempts by Western countries to unleash a spiral of anti-Russian sanctions could lead to a global recession.
On the same day, the European Commission reported that inflation in the eurozone could reach a record 7.6% this year and 4% next. As noted by the European Commissioner for Economics Paolo Gentiloni, inflation is showing the highest levels in the history of the euro area.
Prior to this, on April 13, Russian President Vladimir Putin noted that the refusal of a number of Western countries from normal cooperation with Russia, as well as from part of Russian energy resources, had already hit Europe and the United States. Everywhere prices are rising and inflation is going through the roof.
According to Putin, for these countries it is absolutely unprecedented. Later, he stressed that the “continuation of the sanctions obsession” would lead to “hard to reverse” consequences for the European Union and the poorest countries.
Western countries have stepped up sanctions pressure on Moscow in response to a special operation to protect the civilian population of Donbass, which began on February 24. The special operation began against the background of the aggravated situation in the region in mid-February. Then the authorities of the DPR and LPR reported on the increased shelling by the Ukrainian troops, announced the evacuation of the civilian population in the Russian Federation and asked for recognition of independence. On February 21, Putin signed a corresponding decree.
