Only the ovation that Michael J. Fox received from the film stars who attended the Bafta 2024 ceremony could compete with the congratulations for the triumph of Christopher Nolan Oppenheimer's film, an Oscar candidate. The Back to the Future actor, 62, who has battled Parkinson's since the early 1990s, was the presenter of the best film award.
J. Fox, activist and founder of an organization that researches the disease, also came as a nominee at the gala at the Royal Festival Hall in London, since the film Still: A Michael J. Fox Story was competing as best documentary.
The actor took the stage in a wheelchair and presented the award to the Oppenheimer film. Nolan's wife, producer Emma Thomas, picked up the golden mask for best picture. “With Chris we dream of making movies as a way of life. He is inspiring, brilliant and sometimes he drives you crazy and he is always right. I feel incredibly grateful that he let me come on this journey.”
Oppenheimer It led the nominations with 13, followed by Poor Creatures with 11. Both films competed for best film. In total, Nolan's film won seven golden masks. “I want to thank my fellow nominees, my 'Oppenhomies' and, indeed, all of you in the room,” said Cillian Murphy, after shouting 'Oppenhomies' as he walked up to the stage to collect the award for best leading actor.

“I know it's a cliché to say I'm in awe of you, but I really am in awe,” added the Irish actor and turned to his director. “Thank you for seeing something in me that I probably didn't see myself. Chris, thank you for that extraordinary and thought-provoking script and for always pushing me and always demanding excellence. Oppenheimer was a colossally mischievous and complex character and meant different things to different people. One man's monster is another man's hero. That's why I love movies, because we have a space to celebrate, interrogate and investigate that complexity. And it is a privilege to be part of this community with all of you.”
For her part, Emma Stone, ever closer to winning her second Oscar as best actress After La La Land, she thanked her screenwriter, Tony McNamara, and her dialect coach, Neil Swain, by receiving the Bafta for best actress for playing Bella in Poor Creatures. “She was playing a Brit in this movie and (Neil) didn't laugh at me when he taught me. So thanks, England for accepting me.”
In Yorgos Lanthimos' film, which won five Bafta awards, Stone's character lives with a surgeon to whom she owes her life, but at the same time she is locked up in a mansion. The film that has been compared to a story similar to Frankenstein allowed the actress to give life to a baby, a girl, a teenager and an adult, a character “unprejudiced” as he described them at some point.

Stone was also a producer of Poor Creatures and dedicated the award to her mother. “Because she is the best person I know in the whole world and she inspires me every day. She has always made me believe this crazy idea that I could do something like this and I am beyond grateful. Without it, none of this exists, including my life! So thanks for that too, Mom!”
After the Bafta 2024, Barbie and Maestro would stay away from the Oscars. The main awards of the season have been won by Oppenheimer, Poor Creatures, Anatomy of a Fall and American Fiction. The recognitions for the best performers supporting roles went to Da'Vine Joy Randolph for Those Who Remain and to Robert Downey Jr. for Oppenheimer. “Chris Nolan suggested I try a low-key approach as a last-ditch effort to perhaps resurrect my waning credibility. So I share it with my fellow nominees: this has been an exceptional year.”
Prince William, as Bafta president, attended the ceremony but did not give a speech. The list of winners was announced before the televised ceremony, and Sophie Ellis-Bextor's presentation with 'Murder on the Dancefloor' It was already available on the channel BBC YouTube.
