In response to growing security challenges in AI projects, OpenAI announced the formation of a new Safety and Security Committee.
At a crucial moment for the development of technologies related to artificial intelligence, OpenAI has decided to strengthen its commitment to security by announcing the creation of a new Safety and Security Committee. Chaired by Bret Taylor and made up of leading figures such as Adam D’Angelo, Nicole Seligman and CEO Sam Altman, the committee will be tasked with making recommendations on critical decisions regarding the safety and security of OpenAI projects.
A Commitment to Safety
With the aim of addressing and anticipating security challenges in the field of generative artificial intelligence and developments towards artificial general intelligence (AGI), the committee will work in close collaboration with technical and policy experts from OpenAI. These include Aleksander Madry, Head of Preparedness, Lilian Weng, Head of Safety Systems, John Schulman, Head of Alignment Science, Matt Knight, Head of Security, and Jakub Pachocki, Chief Scientist.
The first task of the Committee will be to evaluate and further develop OpenAI’s processes and safeguards in the next 90 days. At the end of this period, the Committee will share its recommendations with the full board of directors. Subsequently, OpenAI will make public an update on the recommendations adopted, maintaining an approach consistent with safety and security standards.
External collaborations
To support this work, OpenAI has also decided to avail itself of the consultancy of external experts in security, IT and technical security. These include Rob Joyce, a former cybersecurity official who now advises on security issues at OpenAI, and John Carlin, another prominent consultant.
With the increasing complexity of AI models and the acceleration towards AGI, the need for an in-depth discussion and precautionary measures are more urgent than ever. The establishment of the Safety and Security Committee represents a significant step in this direction, assigning recognized experts the task of guiding and advising the company in its security strategies.
