Several hundred people in Turkey held a funeral march to commemorate the victims of the earthquake a year ago. Images of destruction can still be seen in the city of Antakya. There is also mourning in Syria.
In the Turkish city of Antakya, several hundred people remembered those killed in the earthquake on February 6, 2023. In silence and with lights in their hands, the mourners walked through the center of the badly damaged city in the evening. A choir sang songs in a square where people gathered.
According to official figures, 53,000 people died in Turkey alone as a result of the earthquakes a year ago. However, the numbers are questioned. The Turkish Medical Association, for example, assumes at least 120,000 deaths. According to the Afad disaster control authority, around 38,900 buildings collapsed completely. Around 200,000 buildings were so badly damaged that they had to be demolished. The province of Hatay and especially its capital Antakya were hardest hit.
The center of the city is still dotted with piles of rubble even a year after the quake. Further commemorative events have been announced for Tuesday, the anniversary of the disaster.
In Syria, people also remembered the victims of the quake: civilians and members of the White Helmets lit candles in front of a destroyed building in the town of Jindayris in memory of the victims.
