A novelty in the history of the Federal Republic: With Nancy Faeser, a woman becomes Minister of the Interior for the first time. Who is the SPD politician?
Berlin – Nancy Faeser, an SPD surprise on St. Nicholas Day. The future Chancellor Olaf Scholz had appointed Faeser as the new Minister of the Interior. The 51-year-old has hardly appeared outside of her Hessian homeland. In addition, there had been no rumors about the post of interior minister earlier. Who is the future SPD minister? The idea of a woman whose fame will increase significantly in the future.
Nancy Faeser: The first female interior minister in Germany
Faeser should be something “very special”, said the future Chancellor Scholz at the presentation of the names. Specifically: the first Federal Minister of the Interior in Germany. So far the office has been held exclusively by men, most recently Horst Seehofer (CSU). Faeser is head of one of the largest and most important federal ministries, whose area of responsibility ranges from internal security to integration and civil protection to the promotion of sport.
The SPD member of the Bundestag Ralf Stegner said Merkur.de, Faeser is one “A clever specialist whom I have known for a long time from working with them, especially in domestic politics”. Faeser was domestic policy spokeswoman for the Hessian SPD parliamentary group for twelve years. Since 2009 she has been a member of the internal working group of the SPD party executive committee. “That means that is exactly your topic,” said Scholz.
Faeser, who was born in Bad Soden am Taunus in 1970, was most recently active in state politics in Hesse. She has been a member of the SPD for more than 30 years. In 2003 the lawyer made it into the Wiesbaden state parliament for the first time. Since 2019 she has been chairwoman of the SPD Hessen and leader of the opposition in the black-green state parliament. Faeser is involved in local politics in the district council of the Main-Taunus district and as a city councilor in her home town of Schwalbach am Taunus.
Hessian SPD top candidates twice named Faeser as shadow minister before state elections. Under Andrea Ypsilanti she was chosen as Minister of Justice, under Thorsten Schäfer-Gümbel as Minister of the Interior. But Ypsilanti and Schäfer-Gümbel failed because of the CDU. Schäfer-Gümbel was so cracking that Faeser became his successor as state and parliamentary group leader in 2019. Your own reputation never suffered from the SPD bankruptcies. And the fact that she is counted more on the right wing of the SPD did not slow her down in the more left-wing Hessian state association.
Nancy Faeser: The main goal is to combat right-wing extremism
In the Hessian state parliament, Faeser repeatedly worked on the Hessian Interior Minister Peter Beuth (CDU), whose resignation she has repeatedly – unsuccessfully – demanded. She accused Beuth of insufficiently tackling the police scandals that had occurred in Hesse.
When she was introduced, Faeser said: “People rightly claim that we ensure their security.” It is a matter of great concern to her that “the greatest threat that our free democratic basic order currently has, right-wing extremism, is to be combated”. This is what the mother of one son has dealt with many times in her political career. In the Hessian committee of inquiry into the NSU murders, she played a decisive role as chairwoman from 2014 to 2018.
Of the Wiesbaden courier Nancy Faeser wrote in a comment on the nomination: “In future she will be able to show what she meant when she called for a decisive fight against right-wing extremists in the state parliament in Wiesbaden. But she will have to get used to the fact that the sentences of a Federal Minister of the Interior also resonate internationally. “
Incidentally, Faeser is not the only minister from Hesse. Bettina Stark-Watzinger (FDP) from Frankfurt becomes the new Minister of Education; Christine Lambrecht, once a member of the board of the Hessen-SPD, Minister of Defense. In the meantime, there are virtually no prominent posts from Bavaria. That bothers the CSU. (as with AFP)
