In order to draw attention to climate change, environmental activists in Europe have carried out violent actions against famous works of art in recent weeks. Demonstrations became more frequent in the framework of COP27, held in Egypt in recent weeks. Does the moment of climate urgency justify these calls for attention? Is radical activism effective or rather counterproductive? We discuss it in this chapter of En Primera Plana.
Tomato soup on ‘The Sunflowers’ by Van Gogh, mashed potatoes on a painting by Monet in a German museum, activists attached to the paintings of ‘Las Majas’ by Goya in the Prado Museum, a smear on the figures of the British royal family at Madame Tussauds.
And so a long list of attacks on works of art that has been increasing in recent weeks. That is why in this edition we ask ourselves about radical activism and the effectiveness of its actions, together with our studio guests:
– Kantuta Quirós, art historian, curator and teacher.
– Patricia Cuba-Sichler, environmental lawyer.
– Eugénie Clément, anthropologist and specialist in environmental mobilizations.
