To stop the spread of the variant Omicron and the exponential increase in infections the government of Boris Johnson may be forced to field soon new measures. The British press is full of rumors about the premier’s next moves. According to the Financial Times, Johnson was presented with a number of options, foreseen in the so-called Plan C, ranging from a series of “moderate guidelines” to “push” people to follow the rules, “until lockdown”. According to the financial newspaper, Johnson would be more oriented towards the soft line, although he cannot hide the gravity of the situation and the threat represented by Omicron.
A series of documents from the Sage, lo ‘Scientific Advisory Group for Emergencies’, reported by the BBC, indicate that according to scientists who support the government in the fight against Covid, new restrictive measures will be necessary “very early”. According to the Times, however, drafts of the new rules are in preparation, which could forbid contacts in indoor places, excluding business reasons, while pubs and restaurants could operate only with outdoor tables starting from the post-Christmas period.
Fridays in the UK were registered more than 90 thousand new cases. Downing Street, through a spokesman, assured that the government
“continue to carefully examine all data” and the restrictive measures will be “updated” as more information on the new variant is available.
