The research was carried out on one million people infected with Delta and Omicron
Rome – The protection of booster vaccines against the Omicron variant it begins to decrease after two months. This was supported by researchers from the UK Health Security Agency. Experts surveyed over a million people infected with the Delta or Omicron variant of Covid-19 in the UK, between November 27, 2021 and January 12, 2022, the time when the omicron variant began to spread.
The researchers looked at whether people had developed mild disease, but not whether he was hospitalized or not. The results, published in The New England Journal of Medicine, confirm that a booster dose substantially increased protection against the development of mild diseases from the omicron variant. Two doses of the Pfizer / BioNTech vaccine were only 8.8% effective against the Omicron variant after 25 or more weeks. But a third booster dose of this vaccine increased the protection to 67.2%. However, this value dropped to 45.7% after 10 or more weeks. A booster of Moderna, given to those who had received two initial doses of the Pfizer drug, was 73.9% effective against mild Omicron variant disease after two to four weeks. This then dropped to 64.4% after five to nine weeks.
