The Stewards’ statement
There Ferrari he doesn’t lose the ‘second striker’ in view of tomorrow’s match. Carlos Sainz was under investigation for impeding Alexander Albon in Q1, an episode that could have resulted in a three-place penalty on the starting grid and the Scuderia di Maranello driver’s relegation to sixth position.
Albon found Sainz on his way in the second chicane of the Piscine, losing a tenth and a half for that episode in the lap time. The two were heard by the Commissioners together with representatives of Ferrari and Williams and the Stewards decided not to sanction the Ferrari driver.
Sainz admitted that maybe he could have cut the chicane to facilitate Albon’s passage and had been warned by Ferrari of Albon’s arrival behind him. In any case, he tried to make way for the Williams driver to the best of his ability once he entered the chicane.
Great fair play also from Alexander Albon, who defined the situation as ‘grey’, i.e. not a clear impediment on the part of Sainz towards him. Albon underlined that the section of the track where the two cars quickly approached each other was practically a blind zone and therefore it was difficult for Sainz to realize how close the #23 Williams was.
