For the sixth consecutive season Takaaki Nakagami will be part of the Honda satellite team headed by Lucio Cecchinelloafter having signed a contract extension directly with HRC, which will allow him to stay on his bike even in 2023. Nakagami’s future had been questioned by the rise in Moto2 of Ai Ogura, the 21-year-old Japanese winner of two races in the intermediate class and given by many as the number one candidate for teammate seat of newcomer Alex Rins. In the end, it was the 30-year-old from Chiba, who represents the line of continuity, despite the only 46 points accumulated this season and the 16th position in the world rankings.
Nakagami in his seasons in MotoGP has totaled 80 starts, five top 5 finishes, one pole position and four front row starts: “I’m very happy to be able to continue racing in MotoGP in 2023 with LCR Honda IDEMITSU. I would like to thank IDEMITSU and Honda HRC for their continued support. I am looking forward to next season and I will give everything to get the best results with the team, in the meantime, for the rest of this season, I will continue to work hard to improve my performance “. Lucio Cecchinello, team manager of the team commented: “We are very happy with this announcement, in 2020 Taka proved to be a very fast rider capable of fighting for the podium and this year he has consistently fought to be the best Honda rider. I am confident in his potential and thanks to his six years of experience riding the Honda RCV213 motorcycle, he will certainly help the LCR Honda IDEMITSU and HRC Team improve our bike package and bridge the gap with our competitors ”.
The 2023 MotoGP starting grid is therefore practically complete, the only free space remains that of the KTM Tech3 team, seat for which the favorite is Augusto Fernandez.
