Raise awareness among women and the general population of the importance of regular prevention. This is the objective of the numerous initiatives dedicated to women’s health that the Campus Bio-Medico University Hospital Foundation has planned for the benefit of citizens throughout October, in the campaign entitled “Pink October: I think of you, I take care of myself”. Activities that fall within the framework of Pink October, dedicated at an international level to the prevention of breast cancer. In 2023, there were approximately 56,000 new cases of breast cancer in Italy. The cases registered in Lazio are 4,570 according to the latest available data, of which 2,358 in Rome, with an incidence rate of the pathology in the region reaching 136.7 per 100,000 residents.
Among the activities planned for patients there is the possibility of undergoing breast ultrasounds, gynecological visits with pap tests and free dermatological visits. The visits will take place at the Rome Trigoria headquarters of the Policlinico, whose façade will be lit up in pink for the entire month, and at the Porta Pinciana Bio-Medico Campus Polyclinic. Booking of free visits will be possible through a dedicated link present in the My-Hospital newsletter of the Fondazione Policlinico Universitario Campus Biomedico and via e-mail, at the address [email protected]. Furthermore, a program of prevention packages has been set up at special rates in gynaecology, dentistry, dermatology, cardiology, sports medicine, ophthalmology and laser therapy, which can be booked via email to the same email address.
“Since 2016, the Lazio Region has included our Breast unit among the 16 reference centers for the diagnosis and treatment of breast cancer – underlines the CEO of the Fondazione Policlinico Universitario Campus Bio-Medico, Paolo Sormani – This is a recognition of which we are particularly proud because we know well that prevention is the first weapon against the treatment of breast cancer. The initiatives we propose on the occasion of Pink October have the concrete objective of allowing as many women as possible to take care of themselves and. of their health”.
“It is also thanks to the spread of the culture of prevention that the five-year survival of women who discover they have breast cancer has grown increasingly, reaching 88% in 2023 – states Vittorio Altomare, director of the Breast Surgery Unit and the Breast unit of the Campus Bio-Medico University Hospital Foundation – The other determining factor in achieving this objective was the advancement of scientific knowledge and the development of new therapies. It is always important to choose a center with a large case history to be able to access the best care and be able to count on the most recent treatments.”
The Breast unit of the Bio-Medico Campus – reports a note – carried out over 350 breast surgery operations in 2023, more than 5,650 breast visits (first visit and check-up, including oncological) and over 15,000 specialist tests, including mammograms, ultrasounds breasts, biopsies and MRIs. In 2016, the Lazio Region identified the Breast unit of the Campus Bio-Medico University Polyclinic Foundation as one of the reference centers for the diagnosis and treatment of breast cancer. The Unit makes use of a multidisciplinary team of specialists who accompanies women with integrated and personalized clinical and therapeutic paths. It is estimated that women who turn to a breast unit have an 18% higher survival rate than those who turn to non-specialised facilities.
In 2023, new cases of breast cancer in Italy were around 56,000, with an increase of 0.5% compared to 2020 – the note details – The neoplastic pathologies with the highest prevalence among the female population are breast cancer (30 %), colorectal (12.7%), lung (7.5%) and endometrium (5.5%). Research contributes to improving treatments, increasing the survival rate of women affected by breast cancer: 10,223 deaths avoided, -6.0% (2007-2019). The cases registered in Lazio are 4,570 according to the latest available data, of which 2,358 in Rome, with an incidence rate of the pathology in the region reaching 136.7 per 100,000 residents.
